We are always concerned about the effects of medications on our pregnant patients and their children. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), typically used for the treatment of seizures, are also prescribed frequently by psychiatrists. These researchers examined data from the North American AED Pregnancy Registry between 1997 and 2011 to determine the risk for major malformations among infants exposed to AEDs in the first trimester of pregnancy. The Registry, which receives industry support, funded the study.
There were 5667 women exposed to AED monotherapy and 479 AED-unexposed controls, recruited from friends and family of exposed women. Participants enrolled themselves by calling a toll-free number, and some enrolled before any prenatal testing. Lam…
