The recent economic downturn has caused substantial social unrest throughout the world. For a time-trend analysis, these researchers took advantage of regional economic differences to examine the relationship between rates of unemployment and completed suicide in different geographic subregions in the U.K. during the economic recession.
Time trends before the recession (years 2000–2007) showed a decreasing rate of suicide. Between 2008 and 2010, 846 more suicides in males and 155 more in females occurred than if the prerecession trends had continued. Annually, each 10% increase in unemployment was associated with a 1.4% increase in suicide in men, but such changes in employment were not associated with suicide rates in women. Analyses sugges…
