Otherwise healthy individuals sometimes report symptoms of attenuated psychosis, such as fleeting auditory hallucinations (JW Psychiatry Jun 11 2012). Might psychosis fall along a continuum? Are there developmental similarities between individuals who experience attenuated symptoms and patients with frank psychosis?
These investigators assessed 221 young adult university students for distressing, attenuated, positive psychotic symptoms in the past month (not related to the use of alcohol, drugs, or medications). Sixteen (7.3%) reported at least one symptom. The most commonly endorsed items included “Do you find yourself mistrustful or suspicious of other people?” and “Do you worry at times that something might be wrong with your mind?”
