The efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids for depression treatment continues to be debated, despite studies demonstrating a strong mechanistic and epidemiological plausibility. A new meta-analysis and critical commentaries on it reconfirm one previous finding and may refute another.
The meta-analysis of 13 studies excluded 3 from a previous meta-analysis (JW Psychiatry Oct 17 2011) and added another large study. The authors, one of whom had industry funding, concluded that omega-3 fatty acids had no effect on depression, although the treatment did improve moderate, but not milder, depressions.
