Being lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) has often been associated with higher risks for psychiatric symptoms and, occasionally, for overall worse health. In this study of 46 LGB healthy young adults and 41 demographically and medically similar heterosexuals (mean age, 24.6; 20 women in each group), investigators in Canada examined psychiatric symptoms of anxiety, depression, and burnout and diurnal cortisol levels. A composite physiological allostatic load index was determined from 21 biomarkers from the neuroendocrine (including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), immune/inflammatory, metabolic, and cardiovascular systems.
