Proposed DSM-5 criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) include a dissociative subtype. To determine the importance of this proposed subtype, researchers analyzed data from an international, partially industry-supported, layperson-administered interview survey of 25,018 people from nine high-income and seven middle- or low-income countries from four continents.
The 12-month prevalence of DSM-IV PTSD was 1.9%, and 14.4% of PTSD subjects had dissociative symptoms, defined as a 30-day prevalence of depersonalization and/or derealization. Dissociation in PTSD subjects was more common in men than in women and was associated with:
