Risk for metabolic syndrome in patients with bipolar disorder. In a meta-analysis of 37 articles with 81 analyses on 6983 patients with bipolar disorders,1 rates of metabolic syndrome averaged 37.3%; the odds ratio was almost double that in comparison general populations. Rates were highest among those taking antipsychotic medications (45.3% vs. 32.4% among antipsychotic-free patients), and in Australia/New Zealand and the U.S., compared with other areas of the world.
