The potential risks to the fetus from prenatal exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have received much attention. This is less true of the effects of discontinuing SSRIs in pregnant women with preexisting depressive and anxiety disorders. These authors followed 132 pregnant women (mean age, 32.5) seen consecutively at a university's perinatal psychiatry service in Barcelona. The women were taking SSRIs at conception and had a DSM-IV depressive or anxiety disorder (anxiety disorder, 54%; depressive disorder, 46%; psychiatric comorbidity, 38%).
