Cognitive control, the use of contextual information to guide behavior in a flexible and goal-directed manner, depends on suppression of the default mode network (DMN) that mediates internal focus (e.g., thinking about oneself) and activation of the externally focused, task-positive salience network (SN) and central executive network (CEN).
