There has been considerable media attention in the U.K. to this report linking inflammatory bowel disease, measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) immunization, and developmental regression (mainly diagnosed as autism) in children.
Twelve previously normal children who had diarrhea and abdominal pain and who had recently regressed in their development were admitted to a pediatric gastroenterology unit. All underwent MRI scanning, ileocolonoscopy and biopsy, EEG, lumbar puncture, and barium follow-through x-rays. In 8 of the 12 children, the behavioral symptoms were thought by the parents or physician to be associated with MMR immunization. One child's symptoms were thought to be associated with measles infection.
