The 2 most commonly prescribed drug classes for treating symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) work by different mechanisms: α-blockers reduce smooth-muscle tone in the bladder neck and prostate, and 5α-reductase inhibitors reduce prostate volume. To assess the effectiveness of combination therapy, researchers conducted this double-blind, randomized trial in which 3047 men with at least moderately symptomatic BPH received the α-blocker doxazosin (Cardura and generics), the 5α-reductase inhibitor finasteride (Proscar), both drugs, or double placebo. The NIH and makers of the 2 brand-name drugs supported the study.
