Approximately 5% of all thyroid nodules are malignant, and the proportion of nodules that are malignant increases in people younger than 30 or older than 60, those with a history of radiation therapy to the region, and those with a family history of thyroid cancer. In this retrospective study, investigators determined the prevalence of malignancy among thyroid nodules detected incidentally on CT and compared CT findings with those of ultrasound.
Incidental thyroid nodules were identified by CT in 230 patients who then underwent sonographic examination; 118 went on for biopsy.
