Overuse of headache medications (e.g., analgesics, triptans) is thought to cause or exacerbate chronic daily headaches in some patients. Results from uncontrolled studies have suggested that corticosteroids might ease the process of withdrawal from overused headache medications.
This study from Norway included 100 patients with medication-overuse headache; in 87, the underlying headache disorder was migraine (with or without tension headache). Patients were hospitalized, headache medications were stopped, and patients were randomized to receive oral prednisolone (60 mg daily for 2 days, 40 mg daily for 2 days, and 20 mg daily for 2 days) or placebo.
