Several types of cancer occur more often in HIV-infected people than in uninfected individuals, but it’s unclear whether these increased risks result from immunodeficiency or from differences in other cancer risk factors. Recent data have suggested that recipients of renal transplants also have a higher incidence of certain cancers.
Researchers reviewed registry data on incident cancers from seven cohort studies involving 444,172 patients with HIV/AIDS and from five studies involving 31,977 patients with solid organ transplants (97% renal).
