Breast magnetic resonance imaging is generally considered less sensitive than mammography for detection of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), but this conclusion comes from studies in which MRI failed to detect DCIS that was already identified by mammographic microcalcification. Might MRI detect DCIS that is not apparent on mammography?
In this German study, contrast-enhanced breast MRIs were performed on 7319 women with abnormal screening mammograms or with normal mammograms and either clinical symptoms of breast cancer, increased risk for primary or recurrent disease, or heightened concern. Biopsy was done if either imaging method was positive (BI-RADS 4 or 5) or if women had clinical signs of breast abnormality.
