Geriatric “conditions” — for example, incontinence and cognitive impairment — include groups of signs and symptoms that are not necessarily related to one specific disease. U.S. researchers assessed the prevalence of several of these conditions and their association with disability among 11,093 survey respondents aged 65 or older.
The prevalence of geriatric conditions was similar to that of chronic diseases. In a comparison of the youngest group (age range, 65–69) with the oldest group (90 and older), the prevalence of the following geriatric conditions increased with age: cognitive impairment (from 3% to 32%), injurious falls (from 6% to 22%), incontinence (from 9% to 27%), low body-mass index (from 1% to 12%), dizziness (from 10% to 18%),…
