Early goal-directed therapy (EGDT) for sepsis and septic shock (i.e., a set of protocol-driven interventions to optimize hemodynamic measurements, delivered in the emergency department) was associated with reduced in-hospital mortality in a widely cited randomized trial from 2001 (31% for EGDT vs. 47% for standard care; Journal Watch Nov 16 2001).
