When adenomatous polyps are identified during screening colonoscopy, the recommended follow-up surveillance interval depends on polyp characteristics. To describe outcomes after various lengths of follow-up, researchers extended a previous study in which 3121 people underwent screening colonoscopy (Journal Watch Aug 4 2000).
Patients with tubular adenomas ≥10 mm or villous adenomas underwent follow-up colonoscopies at 2 and 5 years; during follow-up, advanced neoplasia (10-mm tubular adenoma, any villous adenoma, high-grade dysplasia, or cancer) was detected in 16% of patients.
