Women who present with acute myocardial infarction are known to have higher rates of mortality and morbidity relative to their male counterparts, even after adjustment for the higher prevalence of comorbidities among women. Researchers from the GUSTO V trial examined the outcomes for more than 4000 women and 12,000 men who presented with acute MI and were randomized to one of two thrombolytic regimens.
Women were older than men and had higher rates of diabetes and hypertension but lower rates of prior coronary events or revascularization.
