Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are associated with increased risk for congestive heart failure, and rosiglitazone is associated with increased risk for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Investigators used an Ontario population-based medical registry to evaluate the effect of these agents in older patients (age, ≥66; mean age, 75) with diabetes who were using at least one oral hypoglycemic agent but not insulin.
Nearly 160,000 patients had been followed for a median of about 4 years. During the follow-up period, about 8% of patients had hospital admissions for CHF, and about 8% were admitted for AMI.
