The natural history of egg allergy has been reported based on small case series only. In a large retrospective chart review from a single pediatric referral center in Maryland, investigators studied 881 children (median age at first visit, 14 months) who had been diagnosed with egg allergy (based on clinical history of IgE-mediated allergic reactions to egg ingestion or egg-specific IgE >2 kU/L). Most patients (57%) received their diagnoses based on positive IgE tests only.
Definitions for clinical tolerance were tolerance of concentrated egg ingestion alone or plus egg IgE <2 kU/L or <6 kU/L with no history of clinical reactivity in the previous 12 months. Based on these criteria, cumulative resolution rates ranged from 12% to 38% by age 6 …
