Results from several small trials have suggested that acupuncture increases pregnancy and live-birth rates among women who undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF), but results from other studies have failed to show any effect. Investigators conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies to further examine the effects of acupuncture.
Data were pooled from seven trials that involved 1366 women who underwent IVF and received acupuncture, sham treatment, or no treatment 1 day before or after the procedure. Embryo transfer with acupuncture was associated with a higher likelihood of clinical pregnancy (odds ratio, 1.65), ongoing pregnancy (OR, 1.87), and live birth (OR, 1.91).
