Substance abuse during pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and infant outcomes, but little is known about complications of pregnancy associated with amphetamine abuse. CDC investigators used data from a 20% sample of U.S. community hospitals to examine trends in amphetamine abuse among pregnant women and to compare outcomes with those associated with cocaine abuse.
From 1998 to 2004, an estimated 36,000 pregnancy hospitalizations included a diagnosis of amphetamine abuse and 130,000 included a diagnosis of cocaine abuse. During this period, hospitalizations for amphetamine abuse doubled (from 0.11 to 0.22 per 100 deliveries) while hospitalizations for cocaine abuse decreased from 0.74 to 0.41 per 100 deliveries.
