With much fanfare in January, the media reported preliminary results from the ENHANCE trial — a manufacturer-sponsored comparison of simvastatin and simvastatin/ezetimibe (the combination known as Vytorin). Complete results now have been published.
The study involved 720 adults (mean age, 46) with familial hypercholesterolemia (mean total cholesterol level, 400 mg/dL; mean LDL cholesterol level, 318 mg/dL). Most patients previously had taken statins, which were withdrawn during a placebo run-in phase of the trial. After the run-in phase, all patients received daily simvastatin (80 mg) and, additionally, were randomized to receive daily ezetimibe (10 mg) or placebo.
