The long-awaited eighth edition of the American College of Chest Physicians’ guidelines on antithrombotic and thrombolytic therapy has been published as a supplement to the June 2008 issue of Chest. These guidelines are probably the most widely cited recommendations on antithrombotic therapy in the U.S. The new edition has expanded to more than 900 pages, which reflects the growth of published evidence in this field. Chapters are devoted to the major categories of antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications, prevention and treatment of venous thrombosis, antithrombotic therapy for patients with coronary and cerebrovascular disease, and antithrombotic therapy in specific populations (e.g., pregnant women, children, surgical patients).
