Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is the most common cause of diarrhea in travelers and in children who live in developing countries. In an effort to prevent diarrhea caused by ETEC, researchers developed a transdermal vaccine delivered via skin patch using the organism’s heat-labile enterotoxin as an antigen. In a manufacturer-funded phase II trial, 201 healthy adults who planned to travel from the U.S. to Mexico or Guatemala were randomized to receive two doses of vaccine or placebo by skin patch at 3 weeks and 1 week before traveling.
