Infection with group B streptococci (GBS) is an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality and can cause sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Because 10% to 30% of pregnant women are colonized with GBS in the genital tract, universal antenatal screening by anogenital culture is recommended at 35 to 37 weeks’ gestation, with administration of IV antibiotics to culture-positive women during labor to prevent neonatal infection.
