Compression ultrasonography (USN) is the standard diagnostic approach for identifying patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Originally, 2-point USN (limited to the groin and popliteal areas, with follow-up repeat testing at 1 week for patients with initial negative findings) was used; more recently, whole-leg color Doppler USN, which is more labor-intensive and less available in some settings than is 2-point USN but does not require follow-up exams, has become popular.
