Patients with recently implanted coronary stents who require noncardiac surgery are not uncommon. Small case series suggest that such patients are at high risk for perioperative cardiac events, including stent thrombosis. In two retrospective analyses, Mayo Clinic researchers calculated the rate of major cardiac events (death, myocardial infarction, stent thrombosis, or repeat coronary revascularization) among patients who underwent noncardiac surgery after coronary stenting.
