Recognition that squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and development of sensitive tests for the presence of HPV have resulted in many attempts to determine the most effective and cost-efficient algorithm for cervical cancer screening (JW Feb 27 2004).
