Circumcision has an impressive ability to prevent HIV acquisition among heterosexual African men (JW Mar 13 2007). Its benefits for HIV prevention in other settings now are coming under enhanced scrutiny, as are its abilities to prevent other sexually transmitted infections. Three new studies add to the data.
In a substudy of the African HIV prevention trial, 3724 uncircumcised men who were randomized to undergo circumcision or not were then monitored for a variety of STIs. Urethral swab samples that were collected 21 months after randomization were positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) in significantly fewer men who were circumcised than in those who were not (15% vs. 22%).
