Researchers have hypothesized that aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs lower risk for breast cancer; one possible mechanism is inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 and the resulting suppression of aromatase, which normally converts androgens to estrogens in breast tissue. Using data from the prospective Nurses’ Health Study II, investigators assessed associations between regular aspirin, NSAID, or acetaminophen use and breast cancer among 112,000 premenopausal women from 1989 through 2003. Acetaminophen was not expected to show an association with breast cancer incidence and was included as a control.
