Severe ankle sprains sometimes lead to chronic instability or other long-term problems. Although most other ligamentous injuries (e.g., shoulder, knee) are temporarily immobilized, recent guidelines for ankle sprains discourage immobilization and recommend early weight-bearing and progressive exercise.
