Among all drugs commonly used to treat community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), quinolones alone also have excellent activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In case reports, researchers have described instances of pulmonary tuberculosis that were mistakenly diagnosed as CAP; some patients with mistaken diagnoses were treated with quinolones with short-term improvement, followed by deterioration and identification of quinolone resistance in the TB isolate. Canadian researchers used data from a large TB registry to determine how often resistance occurs in these circumstances.
