Visual images can enhance healthcare communication and decision making. In this randomized trial, Boston investigators determined the effects of a video decision-support tool on older people’s (age, ≥65) preferences for future care if they develop advanced dementia.
The 106 people in the control group heard a narrator describe advanced dementia; the 94 people in the video group listened to the narrative and also watched a 2-minute video depiction of an 80-year-old woman who had advanced dementia and could not communicate, ambulate, or feed herself.
