Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders in hospital settings have been discussed widely during the past 2 decades. To address trends in in-hospital CPR, researchers analyzed Medicare data on all older patients (age, ≥65) who were hospitalized between 1992 and 2005.
The incidence of in-hospital CPR (2.73 events per 1000 admissions) and the proportion of patients who survived to hospital discharge after CPR (18%) remained relatively constant during the 15-year period. However, the proportion of hospital deaths preceded by CPR increased over time, from 3.8% to 5.2%.
