Observational studies have suggested that statins not only lower blood lipid levels and prevent coronary heart disease (CHD) but lower risk for pneumonia and other infections. In this population-based case-control study, investigators assessed whether current statin use is associated with lower risk for community-acquired pneumonia among immunocompetent community-dwelling older adults (age range, 65–94) in Washington State.
Of 1125 people with pneumonia, 16.1% were current statin users; of 2235 matched control patients, 14.6% were statin users. In an analysis adjusted for age, sex, comorbidities, and other factors, the odds ratio for pneumonia in statin users compared with nonusers was significantly higher (1.26).
