Surgery is the only available treatment option for patients with Dupuytren contractures, which can limit hand function substantially. A nonsurgical option — currently under FDA review — is the injection of collagenase (derived from Clostridium histolyticum) directly into the involved tissue.
In an industry-sponsored trial, 308 patients with Dupuytren contractures were randomized to receive a series of collagenase clostridium histolyticum injections or placebo injections. Entry criteria were flexion contractures between 20 and 100 degrees at metacarpophalangeal joints and between 20 and 80 degrees at proximal interphalangeal joints.
