Randomized trials of lung cancer screening by computed tomography are in progress in Europe and the U.S. In one of these, the Italian DANTE Trial, about 2500 heavy smokers (all men; age range, 60–75) have been randomized to annual CT scanning or to no imaging for 5 years. Each participant undergoes an annual general clinical assessment.
In a preliminary report, after a median follow-up of about 3 years, investigators have detected lung cancer in 5% of CT subjects and in 3% of controls. At this point in the study, exactly 20 men have died of lung cancer in each of the two groups.
