In an analysis of data from a 2002 CDC survey, investigators estimated that 35% of single sexually active women (age range, 15–24) who received contraceptive services — fully 2.7 million — did not concurrently receive services (i.e., screening, counseling, or treatment) for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or HIV infection. Among women who received services that implied that they had engaged in unprotected intercourse, 24% did not receive STI or HIV services. Almost 80% of the 1315 sexually active female respondents received contraceptive services during the year before the survey.
