How to manage women who have gestational hypertension and mild preeclampsia during term pregnancies is controversial. In the U.S., such complications usually are managed with early induction of labor, but this practice is not universal and has not been supported by evidence from randomized clinical trials. Researchers randomized 756 Dutch women who had singleton pregnancies at 36 to 41 weeks' gestation and gestational hypertension (diastolic blood pressure >95 mm Hg on at least 2 occasions) or mild preeclampsia (diastolic BP >90 mm Hg on at least 2 occasions, plus proteinuria) to induction of labor within 24 hours or to expectant monitoring.
