Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) level is associated with excess risk for coronary heart disease, but the role of CRP as a cause, mediator, or marker for CHD is poorly understood. To explore further the associations among CRP levels, other cardiovascular risk factors, and disease incidence, investigators pooled patient-level data from 54 long-term prospective studies that involved more than 160,000 adults without histories of vascular disease.
In cross-sectional analyses, CRP concentration correlated positively with levels of non–HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fibrinogen, interleukin-6, systolic blood pressure, body-mass index, and leukocyte count and correlated inversely with levels of HDL cholesterol and albumin.
