In previous studies, investigators found associations between sleep apnea and glucose intolerance or insulin resistance. However, whether sleep apnea independently confers risk for developing diabetes is unclear. In an observational cohort study, researchers enrolled more than 500 consecutive patients without diabetes who were referred for evaluation of sleep apnea; participants were followed for a mean 2.7 years for incident diabetes.
