Smoking is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. Smoking cessation clearly has many benefits, but subsequent weight gain can occur. Researchers evaluated type 2 diabetes risk that was associated with smoking and smoking cessation in a prospective population-based cohort of 10,892 adults (age range, 45–64; 55% were smokers at enrollment) without baseline diabetes.
During the first 9 years of follow-up, 1254 participants developed diabetes. Smoking, compared with never smoking, was associated with excess risk for diabetes. Hazard ratios, adjusted for diabetes risk factors, were 1.1 (not significant) for those who smoked ≤13 pack-years and 1.4 for those who smoked >13 pack-years.
