Postpartum hospital readmission can be precipitated by factors unrelated to pregnancy. To address the reasons for readmissions during the immediate postpartum period, investigators examined hospital data from 222,751 deliveries at 114 U.S. hospitals in 2007. A total of 2655 women (1.2%) were readmitted within the first 6 weeks postpartum.
Readmissions after primary (2.1%) and repeat (1.4%) cesarean deliveries were substantially more common than after vaginal deliveries (0.83%). Readmissions for endometritis, sepsis or bacteremia, cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, pneumonia, and cholecystitis were more common among women who underwent cesarean deliveries than among those who delivered vaginally.
