How quickly does pulmonary embolism (PE) resolve on computed tomographic angiography (CTA)? Investigators addressed this question in a retrospective study at two Michigan hospitals that involved 814 patients who exhibited acute PE on CTA and did not receive thrombolytic therapy.
Sixty-nine patients underwent another CTA during the ensuing year and all but one patient received anticoagulation. Complete resolution of PE occurred:
in 0 of 1 patient rescanned 1 day after initial CTA
in 6 of 15 patients (40%) rescanned on days 2–7
in 5 of 10 patients (50%) rescanned on days 8–14
in 9 of 11 patients (82%) rescanned on days 15–21
in 7 of 11 patients (64%) rescanned on days 22–28
in 17 of 21 patients (81%) rescanned after day 28
