When intra-articular injections are inaccurately placed — a common occurrence, according to previous studies — the injected substance remains outside the target joint. In a randomized trial involving 184 patients with inflammatory arthritis (mostly rheumatoid), U.K. researchers examined whether ultrasound guidance improves accuracy and, in turn, clinical outcomes.
Patients received injections of triamcinolone, lidocaine, and a contrast agent into shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, or ankles.
