Whether thyroid supplementation improves cognitive function in older adults with mildly elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and normal free thyroxine levels (subclinical hypothyroidism) is unclear. In this community-based randomized U.K. study, 94 people (age, ≥65) with subclinical hypothyroidism received either thyroxine (titrated to normalize TSH) or placebo. Median TSH level at enrollment was 6.6 mU/L. These patients were identified during routine screening and not during clinical evaluations.
Cognitive testing was administered at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Cognition scores did not change over time in either the thyroxine or placebo groups, and no significant differences between groups were noted at 6 or 12 months. T…
