Hyperuricemia is associated with elevated mortality in heart failure (HF) patients, but the effect of gout itself or allopurinol use on HF-related mortality is less clear. Canadian investigators used linked administrative claims databases to explore this relation in a retrospective case-control study that involved about 25,000 HF patients who were readmitted for HF or who died during a 2-year period (cases) and 250,000 HF patients who did not (controls).
In analyses adjusted for a wide range of demographic, clinical, and metabolic factors, case patients with remote histories of gout had 63% higher risk for HF readmission or death than gout-free case patients; risk was 106% higher for those with recent histories of gout. No evidence was found…
