Evidence suggests that migraine, especially migraine with aura, is a risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) disease. In this population-based study that involved nearly 19,000 older adults in Iceland, investigators assessed whether experiencing migraine once or more monthly during midlife was associated with early CV-related or all-cause mortality.
The average age at study entry was 53, and average follow-up was 26 years. Overall, 11% of participants reported migraine, and 8% reported migraine with aura. In analyses adjusted for multiple CV risk factors, participants who had migraine with aura had 21% higher risk for all-cause mortality and 27% higher risk for CV-related mortality than did participants without headache (migraine or nonmigraine)…
